Job Summary


A vacancy exists for a Biodiversity Information Scientist for the Arid and Central Nodes of the Scientific Services division of South African National Parks (SANParks). The successful candidate will provide data management and support functions for node research focused on the arid zone and central national parks. This includes herbarium curation, data capture, management, storage and analysis, including spatial data.
Salary scale: D3 level

This two-year contract position will be based at the Arid Research Unit in Kimberley.

Duties And Responsibilities


-Conduct an inventory of datasets and their locations.
-Develop a strategy and operational plan for capturing these data sets.
-Capture, manage and mobilise data from arid and central parks.
-Integrate relevant data into SANParks data management processes.
-Identify, review and analyse (if needed) SANParks’ datasets and/or data in collaboration with external researchers and open access repositories.
-Draft, consult and finalise reports.
-Publish scientific papers as and where appropriate
-Provide data management mentorship.

Qualifications And Experience


-MSc in Natural Science/Information Science or equivalent qualification.
-Three years of post-graduate working experience in an ecological and/or bioinformatics-related field.
-Excellent knowledge and experience in data management.
-Strong experience in manipulation, analysis and interpretation of large datasets.
-Sound understanding of taxonomy and South Africa’s biodiversity datasets,
-Good working knowledge of Geographical Information Systems.
-Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
-Proven experience of successfully leading the writing of scientific reviews and/or reports.
-Excellent project management and organisational skills.
-Good networking skills.
-A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to national parks across the country.
